Gordon Beeferman – Four Parts Five (2015)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 00:30:30 minutes | 301 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Master, Official Digital Download – Source: Qobuz | © Innova Recordings
Recorded: October 15, 2014 by Peter Karl at Peter Karl Studio, Brooklyn, NY

Four Parts Five, by composer and pianist Gordon Beeferman, is a quintet tour de force that takes virtuosic rhythmic ensemble playing to a new level. It’s a densely harmonious, frequently hair-raising, and deeply groovy piece of music: imagine György Ligeti, Philip Glass, Igor Stravinsky, Steve Coleman and Conlon Nancarrow having a dance party – with Morton Feldman and Count Basie watching wryly from the corner.
Performed by an ensemble consisting of Beeferman (on piano and Hammond B3 organ), Peter Hess (woodwinds), Anders Nilsson (electric guitar), James Ilgenfritz (bass), and Adam Gold (drums), the album’s four pieces showcase tight, disciplined ensemble playing that spans the sparse, punctuated spaces of “1” and the spiraling, expansive curls of “4” with equal facility.

New York-based Beeferman has created a diverse body of adventurous work spanning opera, orchestral, chamber, and vocal music, avant-jazz, free improvisation, and collaborations with dance and other arts. A “fully liberated pianist” (Cadence Magazine), Beeferman has performed extensively in New York as well as across the US and Canada.

“Gordon Beeferman’s Music for an Imaginary Band project may have a cumbersome name, but its output is some of the tightest, most skillfully arranged free jazz we’ve run across for some time. Beeferman and his collaborators…help us imagine what ’60s firebrands such as Albert Ayler would’ve sounded like set against lush, post-Ellingtonian backdrops…” —Time Out New York

“The brainiest score of the six… The claustrophobic family life is presented with bleak realism and bitterly comic flourishes… Complex and daringly modern…Mr. Beeferman’s music, with its skittish melodic lines and pungent atonal harmony, is gritty, fidgety and intriguing.” —New York Times, review of “The Rat Land”

Edvard Grieg – Violin Sonatas, Opp. 18, 13 & 45 – Daniela Cammarano, Alessandro Deljavan (2015)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/88,2 kHz | Time – 01:16:41 minutes | 1,21 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Master, Official Digital Download – Source: Qobuz | Artwork: Digital Booklet | © ÆVEA
Recorded: 14th X 2014, Kulturni Center Lojze Bratuž, Gorica

The 3 Violin Sonatas by Edvard Grieg are a mixture of German and Austrian traditions with the Nordic folk. The experience at the Leipzig Conservatory, where the strong influence of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Robert Schumann was felt, and the trips to Italy, especially Rome, where Grieg met Franz Liszt, contributed greatly to the formation of the style of the Norwegian composer. Similarly of crucial importance were the years he spent in Copenhagen where he completed his studies under the guidance of the Danish composer Niels W. Gade.
The complete Sonatas for violin and piano are included in this album signed by the well-matched couple Cammarano-Deljavan who has already recorded the works by Johannes Brahms and Anton Rubinstein. The 7-mic recording by Alessandro Simonetto is fully dynamic and realistic.

High Risk (feat. Dave Douglas) – Dark Territory (2016)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 40:13 minutes | 446 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Master, Official Digital Download – Source: Bandcamp | Artwork: Digital booklet

Dark Territory is a collection of new music from the creative electronic-inspired ensemble High Risk. Following the success of the group’s eponymous release in 2015, this new album continues to explore the intersection of creative improvisation and modern electronic music production to create a unique sound that Pitchfork described as, “simultaneously chill and surprising, it’s the sound of a group discovering a valid language, and then proceeding to push the limits of that new aesthetic”.

Lead a highly experimental musician, two-time GRAMMY nominated trumpeter Dave Douglas, who’s has spent his career investigating sounds often far outside the acoustic jazz tradition, the album once again features Jonathan Maron (Groove Collective) on electric and acoustic bass, Mark Guiliana (Beat Music, Heernt, David Bowie) on electric and acoustic drums and DJ, producer and beatmaker Shigeto (Ghostly International) on electronics.

The material was recorded by five-time GRAMMY nominated Geoff Countryman (Dr. Luke, Patti LaBelle, Wu-Tang Clan, Randy Brecker, Gregory Porter, Fred Hersch) and mixed by Steve Wall (Semi Precious Weapons, Matisyahu, Meshell Ndegeocello), and mastered by Mark Wilder.
