First issued in the ’60s, this collection of musical Christmas cheer is packed full of the smoothly sung, sentimental favorites associated as much with Nat King Cole himself as with the season. The singer’s performance of “The Christmas Song” is an unforgettable classic reprised here twice, once in an updated version that includes a contemporary vocal from his daughter, Natalie, and also in Cole’s original 1946 recording. Other traditional religious favorites like “I Saw Three Ships” and “Away in a Manger” are also featured, in a setting that, with its well-arranged orchestral accompaniment, manages to sound both sophisticated and folksy.

01. The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas To You)

Nat King Cole – At The Sands (1966/2015)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 35:54 minutes | 1,47 GB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download – Source: ProStudioMasters | Front Cover | © Capitol Records

Recorded in the wee small hours in January 1960 in front of a select crowd of casino guests and other Las Vegas entertainers, this album was billed at the time as Nat King Cole’s only live recording. Accompanied by a big band arranged by Dave Cavanaugh, Cole plays piano and sings standards and old favourites including The Surrey With The Fringe On Top and Miss Otis Regrets.

This rare example of a Nat King Cole live recording captures one of the 20th century’s greatest singers in fine voice in 1960 at the Sands, the Las Vegas headquarters of the Rat Pack. The band swings expertly through its sophisticated charts courtesy of legendary arrangers like Nelson Riddle and Dave Cavanaugh, and Cole demonstrates his command of a wide range of styles, from ballads like “I Wish You Love” and “Funny (Not Much)” to show tunes like “Thou Swell” and “Surrey with the Fringe on Top.” A few bonus tracks are also featured, including a late-’50s studio recording of Duke Ellington’s “In a Mellow Tone” and Cole’ sniffy take on the then-still new rock & roll craze, “Mr. Cole Won’t Rock & Roll”. ~~ AllMusic Review by AllMusic

Nat King Cole – Where Did Everyone Go (1963) [APO Remaster 2010]
PS3 Rip | SACD ISO | DSD64 2.0 & DST64 3.0 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | Scans included | 3,03 GB | Genre: Jazz

This is the third and final collection to feature the team of Nat King Cole and Gordon Jenkins (arranger). Their earlier collaborations yielded the uniformly superior chart-topper Love Is the Thing (1957) and follow-up The Very Thought of You (1958). As the moniker suggests, there is a perceptible poignancy and longing weaved throughout Jenkins’ arrangements. The opener “Where Did Everyone Go?” possesses a solitude accentuated by responsive instrumentation that supports, yet never intrudes. Cole’s practically conversational delivery of pop standards — such as Irving Berlin’s “Say It Isn’t So” or Johnny Mercer’s “When the World Was Young” — become musical soliloquies with the score as a sonic subtext. His rich and cozy baritone carries the ache of “Am I Blue?” and the slinky “I Keep Goin’ Back to Joe’s” into an understated, almost plaintive blues. Here he perfectly demonstrates a boundless capacity as a melodic interpreter of song. “No, I Don’t Want Her” finds Cole’s voice gilded with an intimacy that virtually takes the listener into the singer’s confidence. As he had done on his previous outings with Cole, Jenkins supplies one selection. Suitably “That’s All There Is, There Isn’t Any More” is the last track on the album and certainly provides a lovely contrast to Judy Garland’s arguably more familiar reading.

Tracklist:
01. Where Did Everyone Go?
02. Say It Isn’t So
03. If Love Ain’t There
04. (Ah, The Apple Trees) When The World Was Young

Nat King Cole – More Cole Español (1962/2013)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 28:57 minutes | 1,27 GB | Genre: Jazz
Official Digital Download – Source: HDTracks.com | Label: Capitol Records

More Cole Español is the compelling third installment of songs sung by the legendary musician in Spanish. With arrangements by Ralph Carmichael, the album displays Nat King Cole’s rich versatility. This thrilling collection features hits including “Tres Palabras,” “Vaya Con Dios,” “No Me Platiques” and much, much more.

More Cole Español was Nat King Cole’s third album of songs sung in Spanish, following Cole Español (1958) and A Mis Amigos (1959). Recorded in Mexico City with Mexican singers and musicians, but arranged and conducted by Ralph Carmichael, the collection demonstrated that Cole had made significant advances as a singer in Spanish in a few years. Cole Español had found him providing tentative, phonetically learned syllables over pre-recorded tracks imported from Cuba, giving him the sound of someone trying to avoid making mistakes. A Mis Amigos, cut in Rio de Janeiro during the South American tour promoting Cole Español, was better, but still not a truly complete fit for Cole. He still didn’t sound like he always knew what he was singing, and he still seemed to be working on his pronunciation, but on More Cole Español he was clearly having a lot more fun. In part, this had to be because the arrangements were more rhythmic and uptempo, and Cole must have been taking enthusiasm from the Mexican musicians who accompanied him. And he must have been more familiar with material that included crossover hits like “Vaya con Dios.” Whatever the reasons, More Cole Español was his most successful effort at making music for fans south of the border.

Tracklist:
01 – La Feria De Las Flores
02 – Tres Palabras (Without You)
03 – Las Chiapanecas (While There’s Music There’s Romance)
04 – Adios, Mariquita Linda (Adios And Farewell)

Nat King Cole – A Mis Amigos (1959/2013)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 28:22 minutes | 1,11 GB | Genre: Jazz
Official Digital Download – Source: HDTracks.com | Label: Capitol Records

Arranged by Dave Cavanaugh, A Mis Amigos is Cole’s 1959 gem and second album of Spanish themed music. This rare outing is an astounding experience for any music lover. The legendary musician interprets songs including “Ay, Cosita Linda,” “El Choclo” and “Caboclo Do Rio,” transforming them into instant classics.

The songs on A Mis Amigos are truly terrific and the album’s flow from soft balladry to pulsating Cuban/South American percussion makes it a distinctive recording from Nat King Cole…a different glimpse at an American icon. – Blog Critics

Nat King Cole’s first foray into singing in Spanish, Cole Español, was successful enough to lead to this follow-up, on which a slightly different approach was taken. For Cole Español, Capitol Records imported instrumental tracks recorded in Cuba and had Cole sing over them, having learned the lyrics phonetically. A Mis Amigos, however, was recorded in Rio de Janeiro during Cole’s South American tour of 1959, with Brazilian musicians in the studio alongside the singer. That, the benefit of experience, and the reception his concerts were receiving may have helped improve his performances. He still didn’t have much feeling for Spanish (or, in three instances, Portuguese), but some of the material was more familiar to him, notably “Aquellos Ojos Verdes,” better known in the U.S. as the Jimmy Dorsey hit “Green Eyes,” and “Fantastico,” a specially written number brought in by American songwriters Jack Keller and Noel Sherman.

Tracklist:
01 – Ay, Cosita Linda
02 – Aquellos Ojos Verdes
03 – Suas Maos

Nat King Cole – Welcome To The Club (1959) [Audio Fidelity 2013]
PS3 Rip | SACD ISO | DSD64 2.0 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | 31:13 minutes | Scans included | 1,26 GB

Mastered by Steve Hoffman | Audio Fidelity # AFZ-153 | Genre: Jazz

As the 1950s came to a close, Nat King Cole (vocals/piano) continued creating stylish renditions of pop and jazz flavored standards. On Welcome to the Club (1959) the artist teams up with Dave Cavanaugh and the Count Basie combo — minus the maestro himself due to contractual restraints — for one of Cole’s most powerful collections supported by a big band. In fact, it is Cole’s unmistakable ultra-cool intonations that flawlessly reign in the fiery — and at times overbearing — ensemble arrangements. Right from the start, the vocalist proves that he can swing on the refined and syncopated opening title track “Welcome to the Club.” Cole effortlessly bops with a beat so catchy that toe-tappin’ and finger-snappin’ feel practically obligatory. The bluesy “Anytime, Anyday, Anywhere” adopts a slightly melancholy torch feel that Cole ably milks with his unblemished and supple delivery. The same holds true for the definitive take of Duke Ellington’s “Mood Indigo.” The number is swaddled with a suitably subdued score that Cole dutifully conveys to tremendous effect, making it one of the unmitigated zeniths of his association with Cavanaugh. While on the subject, “Wee Baby Blues” follows a bit later revealing another spot-on example of his expressive technique. The tempo picks back up on the rousing, well-heeled “Late, Late Show” that again re-establishes Nat King Cole as one of the premiere voices of mid-20th century jazz. His ability to reel off lyrics as if they were conversational is nowhere as evident as it is here. The pace picks up steam with the full-speed-ahead frenzy of “Avalon” and again, Cole exudes nothing but soul throughout this compact, yet unhurried rendition.

PS3 Rip | SACD ISO | DST64 2.0 & 3.0 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | 65:41/32:58 mins | Scans included | 2,00 GB | Genre: Jazz

The filmed version of W.C. Handy’s life, St. Louis Blues, is a fictional abomination full of every bad cliché that Hollywood could come up with. Its one saving grace was the dignified performance given by Nat King Cole in the lead role (even if Handy was never a singing pianist). This LP, in addition to featuring Nelson Riddle’s “Overture” from the film, finds Cole singing ten of Handy’s finest compositions (including “Beale Street Blues,” “Careless Love” and the title song) while backed by an orchestra playing Riddle’s arrangements.
