Hesitation Marks is the eighth studio album by Nine Inch Nails, and their first release since 2008’s The Slip, and the first release on a major record label since 2007’s Year Zero. This is NIN’s first release on Columbia Records. The album title is a reference to hesitation wounds, which are produced by testing a bladed weapon before inflicting self-harm or attempting suicide. This deluxe edition of Hesitation Marks was mastered at 48kHz/24-bit and has a greater dynamic range than the standard edition.

All songs on the album were written by Trent Reznor, except for “The Eater of Dreams”, which was written by Trent Reznor and Alessandro Cortini.

It’s grand and disquieting, creepy and meticulously realized, minimalist and overstuffed. It’s one of the best albums of the year and NIN’s finest work since at least 1999’s The Fragile.

Hesitation Marks is the upcoming eighth studio album by American industrial rock act Nine Inch Nails, to be released on September 3, 2013. The album title is derived from hesitation wounds, wounds produced by testing a bladed weapon before attempting suicide or self-harming. The album will be available in two different masters for digital download, a “standard” version and an “Audiophile Mastered Version” – the latter having extended dynamic range, not meant to be competitive in the loudness war.

Retirement never suited Trent Reznor. A workaholic who tempers his obsessive nature with a healthy streak of perfectionism, Reznor has put Nine Inch Nails in hibernation before, but the difference between the five years separating 2013’s Hesitation Marks and 2008’s The Slip and his previous extended gaps — the half-decade between 1994’s The Downward Spiral and The Fragile, the six years between The Fragile and 2005’s With Teeth — is that Reznor didn’t go into seclusion, he merely stepped away from NIN. David Fincher drafted him to score The Social Network in 2010 — Trent received an Academy Award for his trouble — and that same year he formed How to Destroy Angels with longtime collaborator Atticus Ross and Mariqueen Maandig. Echoes of these two projects can be heard within the disciplined, detailed Hesitation Marks but much of the album’s measured mood derives from the great settling within Reznor’s personal life. He married Maandig in 2009 and subsequently had two children, so he’s a decidedly different musician in 2013 than he was in 1993: he’s not the tortured, angry young rebel struggling with addictions and angst, he’s a sober family man. Sobriety centered Reznor and working in other capacities reinvigorated him, leading to the masterful Hesitation Marks, where he cannily evokes the past within the cloak of the future while focusing on the present. Certainly, Hesitation Marks brings to mind some of the earliest Nine Inch Nails records, particularly in how it’s built upon actual danceable rhythms, but the sonic palette is brighter and broader than either Pretty Hate Machine or The Downward Spiral, feeling expansive even when it’s punctuated with jarring, jagged bursts of electric noise and bursts of clustered beats. Reznor enlisted a bunch of art rock vets to help achieve this coiled, cloistered sound — King Crimson guitarist Adrian Belew and bassist Pino Palladino play often, Lindsey Buckingham throws in some guitar; on the deluxe edition, Todd Rundgren Utopia-fies “All Time Low” with layers of harmonies — and the additional musicians help keep the album open. Even if “Everything” — a surprising power pop rush that’s easily the most exuberant Nine Inch Nails has ever sounded — was excised, Hesitation Marks would qualify as the most hopeful NIN album ever. Pain still punctuates the lyrics, Reznor still slides into moody black pools of sound, but there is no wallowing here, no fetishization of darkness. There is shade and light within Reznor’s immaculate constructions, there is the ebb and flow of life, there is joy within the sheer sheets of sound. Hesitation Marks makes it quite clear that Trent Reznor is no longer an angry young man but rather a restless, inventive artist who is at peace with himself, and the result is a record that provides real, lasting nourishment.

The Slip is the seventh studio album by American industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails, released on July 22, 2008. It was the fourth consecutive Nine Inch Nails release to be produced by frontman Trent Reznor with collaborators Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder. The album was released for free under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-SA) license, with the message from Reznor, “this one’s on me”. The Slip was initially released digitally via the Nine Inch Nails official website without any prior advertisement or promotion. A limited-edition, physical version followed two months later, though this iteration of the album was not free.

The Slip was originally intended to be an EP, but eventually grew to be a full-length album. It was recorded and released in three weeks; Reznor released the album’s single, “Discipline”, to radio stations himself, less than 24 hours after it was mastered by Moulder. Critical reception of the album has been generally favorable, and its unorthodox method of release attracted significant media attention. The album peaked at number 13 on the Billboard 200.

Ghosts I – IV, a 36 track instrumental collection. Almost two hours of music composed and recorded over an intense ten week period in the fall of 2007. Ghosts I – IV sprawls Nine Inch Nails across a variety of new terrain.

Roughly a year after Year Zero — a year marked by lots of sniping with his record company first about their clueless promotion then devolving into a tirade about their general uselessness — Trent Reznor broke free of Interscope/Universal and became a free agent, releasing music where and when he wanted. To celebrate his freedom he released the four-part Ghosts, a clearinghouse of 36 instrumentals all created during the years he crafted Year Zero. It should come as no great surprise that Ghosts then plays like a sketchbook, a place where Reznor jotted down sounds and textures that flitted across his mind and then either took them no further, or decided to spin them into something entirely new for the full album. These aren’t songs, they’re seeds, and they (appropriately) aren’t even graced with titles; they’re all dubbed “Ghosts,” parts one through 36, and if Reznor didn’t spend enough time crafting them into proper songs, don’t feel too bad if you don’t spend enough time with Ghosts to sort through them, picking out which fragments are powered by a clenched electro beat and which are glassy ambient shards. Even fanatics might be hard-pressed to give Ghosts such a careful listen as it’s simply not meant to be so closely observed. It’s meant to be taken as surface, perhaps skimmed for samples, but generally to be used as mildly unsettling mood music — a specialty of Reznor’s, to be sure, but he’s better and scarier when his ideas are more finely honed than they are here.

Broken is the debut EP and major label debut by the American industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails, released on September 22, 1992 by TVT Records, Nothing Records and Interscope Records. It is the band’s second release following their debut studio album Pretty Hate Machine (1989), and consists entirely of new material. Produced by frontman Trent Reznor and Flood, it replaces the synthpop style of Pretty Hate Machine with a considerably heavier sound that would act as a precursor for Nine Inch Nails’ acclaimed second studio album The Downward Spiral (1994).

The music videos that accompanied 5 of the 8 tracks from the EP were widely censored from television airplay due to their disturbing content. Nevertheless, “Wish” won the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance at the 35th Grammy Awards, and the Woodstock ’94 performance of “Happiness in Slavery” won the same award at the 38th Grammy Awards. Contributing to the band’s growing mainstream success, Broken debuted to generally positive reactions, and peaked at number 7 on the US Billboard 200 chart. A companion remix EP titled Fixed was released in late 1992.

The Fragile is the third studio album by the American industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails, released as a double album on September 21, 1999 by Nothing Records and Interscope Records in the United States and by Island Records in Europe. It was produced by Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor and longtime collaborator Alan Moulder. The Fragile peaked at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart during its debut week, before dropping to number 16 the following week.[1] The album was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on January 4, 2000, denoting shipments of two million copies in the United States.Despite some criticism for its length and lyrical substance,the album received positive reviews from most music critics. The Fragile was promoted with four singles, “The Day the World Went Away”, “We’re in This Together”, “Into the Void” and “Starfuckers, Inc.”

A companion remix album titled Things Falling Apart was released in 2000. In 2016, as part of Nine Inch Nails’ campaign to release all of their albums on vinyl, the band announced an extended instrumental version titled The Fragile: Deviations 1, to be released in 2017.

The Downward Spiral is the second studio album by the American industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails, released on March 8, 1994 by Nothing Records and Interscope Records in the United States and by Island Records in Europe. It is a concept album detailing the destruction of a man from the beginning of his “downward spiral” to his attempt at suicide. The Downward Spiral features elements of industrial rock, techno and heavy metal music, in contrast to the band’s synthpop-influenced debut album Pretty Hate Machine (1989), and was produced by Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor and Flood.

The Downward Spiral was conceived after the Lollapalooza 1991 festival tour as a pivot for Reznor’s personal issues and the “negative vibe” felt by the band. Reznor moved to 10050 Cielo Drive, Benedict Canyon, Los Angeles in Beverly Hills, California the following year, where actress Sharon Tate was murdered by members of the Manson Family. It was used as a studio called “Le Pig” for recording Broken and The Downward Spiral with collaborations from other musicians. The album was influenced by late 1970s rock music albums such as David Bowie’s Low and Pink Floyd’s The Wall in particular, and focused on texture and space, avoiding usage of guitars and synthesizers.

“I’ve been inspired for this record from a very young age,” said Eldredge. “I dreamt of the day I could record all these classic songs that I’ve loved since I was a little kid. I recorded those classics in New York City and tried to give a tip of the hat to the ones that came before me – Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Ray Charles – by adding that swing and that soul to the best of my ability. When it came to actually recording, I wanted to live in the experience. We hung Christmas lights in the studio in the middle of May and had musicians from the best bands in the world all in the same room – from horns to strings. Everyone was so inspired to make this classic record. I think it really shows in the songs and I can’t wait for people to hear that magic we found.”

Abandoning all modern trappings, Brett Eldredge chooses to go the full Frank Sinatra on his 2016 seasonal affair Glow. Leaving behind the R&B rhythms that underpin his hit singles is a bit of a risky move for Eldredge, as it pushes the spotlight directly onto his vocals. Eldredge may not take many risks on Glow — he’s determined to adhere to string-saturated tradition, so he never plays with his phrasing — but he’s warm and charming, which gives him enough swagger to ride the snazzy big-band arrangements on Glow. Often, these tunes — everything is familiar apart from the newly written title track, which is designed to pass without notice among the standards — are so overheated they suggest a Vegas revue, but that’s also the appeal of Glow. Eldredge plays with the schlockiest aspects of show biz, but his tongue is never in his cheek: he believes in this bluster, and that’s the fun of Glow. (Stephen Thomas Erlewine, allmusic.com)
