Jackie Evancho – Awakening (2014)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44.1kHz | Time – 00:49:39 minutes | 532 MB | Genre: Classical Сrossover, Vocal Pop
Official Digital Download – Source: HDTracks | © Portrait/Sony Masterworks
Recorded: Audible Images in Pittsburgh, PA and Shine Studios in London, England.

Awakening is the “America’s Got Talent” child prodigy, Jackie Evancho’s second studio album. The young soprano takes on twelve tracks that range from “Think of Me” from Phantom of the Opera to works by Rachmaninoff. The record is a cross over of classical covers to contemporary works, including U2’s “With or Without You” and Lara Fabians “Je t’aime”.

Fourteen-year-old vocal sensation Jackie Evancho’s new album, Awakening, signals some new directions for the platinum-selling artist. Without foregoing the beautiful and lush classical-crossover compositions for which Evancho has became famous, she also extends her stylistic reach with contemporary material on songs such as the haunting folk song “The Rains of Castamere” from HBO’s hit series “Game of Thrones.” Jackie also takes a bigger step forward on her version of U2’s “With or Without You,” and also sings a few original songs including the anthem “Take Me There” and “Open Fields of Grace,” which were written especially for her. Produced by Nick Patrick, “Awakening” also features the ethereal ballad “Memories” by the Dutch band, Within Temptation, and the popular classic “Think of Me” from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera. Rounding out the album are the classical standards “Ave Maria” and Rachmaninoff’s “Vocalise.” Says Evancho about Awakening, “I feel that my singing style has matured, and it’s easier for me to feel comfortable onstage.” Jackie will be filming a new PBS pledge special that will air nationally in December and will be touring throughout the U.S. starting in November 2014.

Jackie Evancho dazzled American television audiences at age ten gaining global recognition with her stunning debut on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent.” Since then, she has released a string of successful albums, acted in Robert Redford’s “The Company You Keep” alongside Susan Sarandon and performed for President and Mrs. Obama at the National Christmas Tree Lighting in Washington D.C. Earlier this year, Jackie performed at the PBS Memorial Day Concert and also at the prestigious Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Throughout the summer Jackie is doing a special promotion with tween clothing store Justice. She will be featured in their summer catalogue and the video for an exclusive song she recorded for the chain, “Go Time,” will be featured on their web site and on screens in all 900 Justice stores nationwide.

Lissie – My Wild West (2016)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 00:42:55 minutes | 466 MB | Genre: Folk
Studio Master, Official Digital Download  – Source: Qobuz | Artwork: Front cover | Label: Cooking Vinyl

There are both goodbyes and new beginnings throughout Lissie’s third album, My Wild West, reflecting her recent move from California back to her native Midwest. There is, therefore, a wistfulness, perhaps even a mournfulness, that makes the gentler country-flavoured songs like Together or Apart and Ojai extremely emotive. Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt come to mind on these numbers; some tracks equally boast some U2-esque rock sounds, including the title track and Don’t You Give Up On Me, although this is not where we see the best of the young artist. The nasal twang to her gripping vocals is among several redeeming features on an LP that is an admirable, if not spectacular, addition to the catalogue of an impressively consistent artist to date.

Lake Street Dive – Side Pony (2016)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/96 kHz | Time – 40:22 minutes | 849 MB | Genre: Folk, Jazz
Studio Master, Official Digital Download  – Source: HDTracks | Digital Booklet | © Nonesuch

Lake Street Dive’s presents their Nonesuch Records debut album, Side Pony. The four band members—drummer Michael Calabrese, bassist Bridget Kearney, singer Rachael Price, and guitarist/trumpeter Michael “McDuck” Olson—worked with Nashville-based producer Dave Cobb (Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton, Secret Sisters) on the record.

“. . .We’ve always been this somewhat uncategorizable, weird, outlying, genre-less band. That’s the statement we wanted to make with this record: be yourself.” – bassist Bridget Kearney

Centered on the warm, highly resonant vocals of Rachael Price, Boston’s Lake Street Dive began their career as an eclectic, adventurous quartet just as likely to play a twangy, Fleetwood Mac song or a Hall & Oates cover as any of their own soulful, jazz- and R&B-influenced originals. However, since their 2010 eponymous debut, Lake Street Dive, which also features guitarist/trumpeter Mike Olson, bassist Bridget Kearney, and drummer Mike Calabrese, have streamlined their approach, whittling their influences down to a handful of touchstones from guitar-soaked Southern rock to buoyant, dance-oriented old-school R&B. On the group’s fourth full-length album and Nonesuch Records debut, 2016’s Side Pony, they’ve honed their sound even further, zeroing in on a vintage-inspired, ’60s soul aesthetic. Named after Kearney’s hairstyle, and serving as an easy metaphor for the group’s unpredictable creative choices, Side Pony was recorded in Nashville with producer Dave Cobb, who has previously worked with the likes of Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, Shooter Jennings, and others. Purportedly, Cobb requested the band come to the sessions with song sketches, rather than fully composed pieces. Furthermore, he encouraged them to crate dive for vintage LPs from which to draw inspiration, a process that may have led the band to sample Major Lance’s rare 1978 Motown-side “Love Pains” for their ’70s disco-era soul-sounding track “Can’t Stop.” While there is plenty to admire about how closely Lake Street Dive hew to their vintage-sounding paradigm, they do take some interesting side-steps on their retro journey, jumping into the Beatles-meets-Janis Joplin-sounding “I Don’t Care About You,” and kicking out the jams on the fuzz-toned, psych-soul anthem “Hell Yeah.” Ultimately, hooks abound on Side Pony and cuts like “Godawful Things,” “Call Off Your Dogs,” and “How Good It Feels,” with their shimmery, echo-chamber, AM Radio vibe, stick in your head about as much as many of the classic sides they are attempting to match. ~~AllMusic Review by Matt Collar

Lexi Walker – Merry Christmas (2015)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 24:50 minutes | 282 MB | Genre: Pop, Holiday, Christmas
Studio Master, Official Digital Download – Source: Qobuz | Digital Booklet | @ Portrait Records/Sony Music

Sony Music Masterworks imprint Portrait Records signs singing sensation Lexi Walker, the dynamic 13-year-old whose performance of “Let It Go” from Frozen has received over 72 million YouTube views.
Lexi’s holiday-themed debut album Merry Christmas, available November 20, features traditional and new holiday songs from both sides of the Atlantic, including “O Holy Night,” “Christmastime Is Here,” “Pat A Pan,” “When a Child is Born,” plus “We Need a Little Christmas” from Broadway’s Mame. It also includes her rendition of the hit “Let It Go” and more.

At just 13 years old, the eighth-grade redhead has not only starred in a viral video of “Let It Go,” she has performed on America’s Got Talent with the One Voice Children’s Choir and sung with The Piano Guys, Kristin Chenoweth, Lindsey Stirling, and David Archuleta. She recently opened for Idina Menzel at a benefit concert in Utah. Lexi’s rendition of the national anthem at a Real Salt Lake soccer game also reached millions of viewers, and she’ll be belting out “The Star-Spangled Banner” again at the San Francisco 49ers-Arizona Cardinals NFL game on November 29.

Lexi has been singing ever since she can remember. Her grandmother recalls Lexi at two years old, sitting in a gift shop singing along with a stuffed bear that played the Beatles tune “I Will,” over and over until a crowd started to gather. A veteran voice teacher, her grandmother realized right then that she had another talented young singer to nurture.

Since then, Lexi’s explosive young career has included performances on Good Morning America, The Queen Latifah Show, CBS New York’s The Couch, and numerous TV news programs. She has appeared at Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, the Disney Christmas Day Parade, and Christmas for the Troops at the Kennedy Center. Based in Cottonwood Heights, Utah, she has toured Japan and the East Coast, and looks forward to bringing her music to new audiences both close to home and around the world – all while continuing to study her favorite subjects (math, science, and art) and eating plenty of sushi and Thai food along the way.

Leclair, Spohr, Wieniawski – Duets for Two Violins – Itzhak Perlman, Pinchas Zukerman (2015)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 46:38 minutes | 942 MB | Genre: Classical
Studio Master, Official Digital Download – Source: Qobuz | Digital booklet | © Parlophone Records/Warner Classics
Recorded: Temple Church, London, 25 & 26 October 1976

The violin duet repertoire remains somewhat marginal, which explains the rarity of recitals such as this one, in which two star violinists appear opposite one another. Most works in the genre were written by virtuosos such as Leclair, Viotti, Spohr, Wieniawski and Ysaÿe, but composers of the calibre of Telemann, Michael Haydn, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Honegger and Bartók also took up the challenge. Given the restrictions imposed by having to combine the sound of two identical instruments whose primary role is more melodic than polyphonic, composers have tended to focus on thematic development, harmony and rhythm, resulting in highly imaginative explorations of the instrument’s technical potential.

Jean-Marie Leclair (1697–1764), founder of the French violin school, wrote his 12 duets in an elegant idiom that brought together the best of the French and Italian styles. One of his contemporaries praised them in these terms: “Leclair was the first who, without imitating anything, created beautiful and original works that he could rightly call his own.” Ludwig Spohr (1784–1859), one of the leading violinists of his day, was also an incredibly prolific composer who ventured into all genres, from opera to the most diverse forms of chamber music. His violin duets skilfully highlight the agility of the two players and are of the same high quality as those of Leclair, as well as sharing their optimistic spirit.

Norwegian composer Johan Halvorsen (1864–1935), another brilliant violinist, took a different approach, blending together the related sonorities of the violin and the viola in his famous transcription of the Passacaglia, the sixth and final movement of Handel’s Keyboard Suite No.7 in G minor. While the first third of the transcription follows the model of the original fairly closely, the rest is largely of Halvorsen’s own devising, revealing both his creativity and his instrumental virtuosity. Henryk Wieniawski (1835–1880), whose brilliance dazzled all his contemporaries, including the great Joseph Joachim himself, left a catalogue of works devoted exclusively to his own instrument. His Études-Caprices, Op.18, for two violins were in fact meant for teaching purposes and written for a first violin “with secondviolin accompaniment” — the latter part being designed for the teacher.

There was no violin duo to equal that of father and son David and Igor Oistrakh until lifelong friends Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman joined forces. Taking up the Oistrakhs’ baton with inimitable ease, virtuosity and humour, they captivate audiences every time they appear on stage together. This recital, whose programme features an original and attractive selection of pieces from what remains a little-known yet sparkling and sophisticated repertoire, marked the first phase in a fruitful collaboration which went on to develop in various different ways as they recorded together again as a duo (volume 20), but also as members of a trio (volume 48) and a quartet (volume 25). –Jean-Michel Molkhou

Len Chandler – To Be A Man (1966/2016)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/192 kHz | Time – 46:24 minutes | 1,68 GB | Genre: Folk
Studio Master, Official Digital Download – Source: AcousticSounds | Artwork: Front cover | © Columbia/Legacy

He would be forgotten several decades later, but in the middle ’60s Len Chandler was a reasonably well-known socially conscious folk singer/songwriter. Produced by the estimable John Hammond, his Columbia debut was commendably earnest and goodhearted New York 1960s folk. It’s dated, though, in the melodramatic, serious execution of the material. While his concerns are diverse – including anthemic odes to self-pride, blues, love ballads, and a yearning for a more just world – and compassionate, the songs are lacking in outstanding or exceptionally moving qualities. That’s particularly true of the vocals, which like so many folk recordings of the era have the sort of exhortatory vibrato that would get largely washed out of contemporary folk and folk-rock by the end of the 1960s in favor of more naturalistic styles. In view of Columbia’s pioneering folk-rock efforts of the mid-’60s, it’s interesting to hear the spiky electric guitar and tambourine on the bluesy “Feet First Baby”, as if the label and Hammond were gingerly exploring possibilities of more contemporary backup. That arrangement isn’t too typical of the album, though, which largely sticks to acoustic if rhythmic folk.
